The coming up Comic-con in San Diego is supposed to be the biggest one yet and I am excited to be lucky to experience it all once again. Comic con is without a doubt the largest collection of fans who show up from all over the world to celebrate geek culture. Actors, artist, cosplayers, commoners, technocrats, and media makers all having a good time indulging with one another.
As with last time, I plan on bringing my camera gear and also partaking in the celebration. Packing smart and efficiently is of the utmost importance otherwise you can get to wrapped up the gear, swapping lens, and wasting time doing things not fun. Luckily experience has taught me what focal lengths are the most effective at Comic Con so this trip I am going to share what the lenses are that I am bringing. This trip I am going to be bringing just three of my lenses based off what I’ve learned from experience.
The following lenses are the Canon 16-35mm f/4L USM IS, Tamron 24-70mm F/2.8 Di VC USD G2 and the Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 Di VC G2. But why these lenses? Am I a Tamron shill? Do I hate primes? No. It’s just that I’ve found that while shooting around the convention center often times you will find yourself very limited in space. Having adaptable lenses that cover almost all the focal lengths you usually need is extremely useful.
The Canon 16-35mm f/4L USM can be used to really open up crowded spaces when at 16mm, and the convention floor is always crowded. Also at 35mm you can do portraits though sometimes you have to get really close to your subject. The 24-70mm focal length is extremely versatile and I suspect I will be using this lens often. The ability to go wide and telephoto is extremely useful and being at f/2.8 it is a fast lens. And then last but not least there is the Tamaron 70-200mm f/2.8 G2. This will be the workhorse lens during most of the convention. The crowd is not always something you want in your scene and the ability to crop in close onto your subject is very useful in filtering out the extra noise. Additionally moving around the convention center floor can most of the time be very challenging so having a zooming lens that gives you the ability to capture more perspectives easier is also extremely useful.
